Kampgrounds of America, Inc. (KOA) announced the new Riverside section at the Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday. The expansion brings 59 modern RV sites near the Ausable River, strengthening the campground’s position as one of the Northeast’s most beautiful and adventure-friendly camping destinations, KOA said in a release.

The new Riverside section, located just a quarter-mile from the longstanding Mountainside section, features 50/30 amp full hookup RV sites with a mix of back-in and pull-thru options. A dozen of these sites also include KOA Patios, offering an upgraded outdoor experience for campers. With a focus on pet-friendly travel, new additions include a KampK9 dog park.

“We’re proud to grow alongside this incredible community,” said Jill Currier, senior vice president, OAK operations at KOA. “With the new Riverside section, we’re not only enhancing the camping experience but also boosting local tourism and helping more visitors connect with the beauty and adventure of the Ausable River and Whiteface area.”

Campgrounds have a significant economic and cultural impact on local communities. According to KOA’s annual Camping and Outdoor Hospitality Report, campers injected $61 billion into local economies in 2024, with the average camper spending $200 daily while camping. Campers are looking to experience the culture of local regions, with 27% of campers saying they are interested in visiting small towns, and another 27% drawn to food tourism.

The Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday’s expansion reflects KOA’s broader efforts to meet growing demand for outdoor travel while supporting the community, the company said. As part of that commitment, KOA recently sponsored the Ausable River Two-Fly Challenge, an annual three-day celebration of fly fishing, conservation and community, where anglers compete while enjoying music, food and festivities along the Ausable River.

The Riverside section of the Lake Placid/Whiteface Mountain KOA Holiday is located at 5636 NY-86, while the original Mountainside section is located at 5591 NY-86, both in Wilmington, New York.

The campground is open May-October, with an on-site motel that is open year-round.
