Elkhart County Students Learn About Manufacturing Up Close
Thousands of students are learning about careers in instruments, RVs, packaging and other industries in Elkhart County as Horizon Education Alliance holds its annual Manufacturing Days, according to a recent report from The Elkhart Truth.
Around 2,000 students from middle and junior high schools throughout the county are touring companies including Brinkley RV, Conn-Selmer, Genesis Products, Hoosier Crane, NIBCO Inc. and Welch Packaging.
There are 20 locations in all, said Manufacturing Days coordinator Jeni Anderson. She said the aim of the tours is to open students’ eyes to the range of careers at these types of companies.
“The overall goal is to introduce career pathways within manufacturing to 8th-graders,” Anderson said. “So, yes, you can work on the manufacturing floor, but we also want them to know, hey, we have sales and marketing, interior design. Lippert has wellness coaches. You can also do engineering. We want them to see how vast their opportunities are within our county in manufacturing.”
At MORryde International this week, Concord Junior High School students got a close look at every aspect of the business. Each of the five stations including a demonstration or activity, such as a game to match aftermarket parts to an RV.
